The World of Demons (4): Pressure
It was not until the afternoon when another blue-robed teacher walked into the classroom with a stack of yellow test papers that the students reluctantly returned the two books in their hands to the supervising teacher.
It was the familiar exam, and the familiar pattern of knowing the results quickly after the exam.
The good news was that blond Ye Se passed the test this time. The score of 72 almost made him cry with joy.
What attracted the attention of Xia Ruize and the other two was a group of students who had failed both the morning and afternoon assessments. They were singled out by the gray-robed teacher and taken to the front of the classroom.
The blue-robed teacher, who was sitting on the podium doing nothing, looked up at the twenty-three depressed young people around him and chanted a long spell. When the spell ended, a long green vine appeared in his hand. The blue-robed man swung the vine and hit the students hard.
With a “pop” sound, a blood mark appeared on the right leg of the students. It seemed that the vine had drawn blood on the leg, and the blood was stained on the yellow robe.
Xia Ruize and the other two found it quite novel to see the man in blue robe performing magic, but the other students were not excited by seeing the distinguished magician perform magic with their own eyes. They thought, “birds of a feather flock together.” Today, their classmates were punished, and tomorrow they might be the ones to be punished.
Fortunately, after the punishment, the blue-robed teacher waved his hands casually, and the students who were in so much pain that they were about to cry were driven to the back of the classroom to continue standing as punishment.
Their legs were injured and they hadn’t eaten lunch, but they still had to listen carefully to the afternoon class, otherwise the next assessment would be in danger. Not to mention the students who were being punished, even Xia Ruize couldn’t help but feel that it was too difficult!
He remembered the reminder from the instructor that if they failed three assessments, they would be expelled from the academy, which would be even more difficult!
As expected, the afternoon classes were long, boring, and filled with tons of theoretical knowledge. After four hours of classes, as soon as the teacher left the classroom, some students sat down on their desks, their heads filled with the content learned in the daytime classes. Their brains were so clogged with material that they could no longer think.
The sky outside the classroom had already become so dark that one could not see anything more than five meters away. The gray-robed teacher silently led the tortured students back to the dormitory and took away the clay pots of the students who were eligible to have dinner.
When they came back again, the gray-robed teacher not only brought dinner to the students, but also a pile of books for each of them.
When the instructor pushed open the door of Xia Ruize’s four-person dormitory, his expression was very kind. After all, all four people in the dormitory passed the afternoon exam, especially three of them who had not been punished so far, which showed that they still had good potential. They were expected to stay until the end and successfully become magic apprentices, and maybe even become colleagues in the future, so of course his attitude was good.
The teacher asked the four people to take a stack of four books each. In addition to the standard candle, he also gave them three more candles, saying that this was a reward for Xia Ruize and the other two for passing the day’s assessment.
Xia Ruize and Cheng Huaiqian looked at the short and thin candles in their hands and looked at each other with helpless expressions. This academy really had heavy punishments and not great rewards.
When Ye Se saw the candles, his eyes lit up. His roommate had candles, and he could use some of the light to study a little longer at night.
As usual, Gao Hexuan pushed the dinner to Ye Se, but Ye Se firmly refused:
“I never eat at night, so you don’t have to share with me!”
He clearly forgot that he had enjoyed a delicious and satisfying meal the night before.
Then Ye Se watched his three roommates pull out a large rattan suitcase from under the wooden bed, take out a bag of dry food that he couldn’t name, and open one at random, and the aroma of meat filled the air.
Realizing that his roommate had better food, Ye Se accepted his roommate’s kindness with a touched face.
The aroma of the food made Yese immediately forget the small question of whether his roommate had brought a suitcase to the dormitory the day before. He was completely immersed in the question of what kind of food that white, plump, round thing was.
This doubt even made Ye Se suddenly feel that the food in the clay pot in front of him was not so fragrant. This thought scared Ye Se, and he immediately ate a few more spoonfuls and reflected on himself being too greedy.
Of course, the actual situation was that what Ye Se saw was just an illusion. Meat buns and the like were not as delicious as a hot pot.
Just to cover up the smell of the hot pot, Xia Ruize created an exquisite illusion for Ye Se to affect his sense of smell.
After dinner, Ye Se immersed himself in busy study again, flipping through the four new books he had received with full concentration. However, he was already very tired from classes during the day and would fall asleep after studying less than two pages. He was awakened by his body falling down and quickly continued to study two more pages.
After repeating this twice, Ye Se realized that this was not working, so he banged his head against the desk several times without mercy, in an attempt to sober himself up.
Fortunately, he was the only one left in the dormitory at that time. Xia Ruize and the other two ate hot pot and left the dormitory with the illusion of reading. They wanted to see for themselves what the situation was like outside the mission world academy.
The area of the academy was not very large. Surrounding a large dirt playground, there was a large auditorium for holding sacred selections, a teaching building for students to attend classes, a library for storing books, and a ground-level dormitory for gray-robed and blue-robed teachers.
Apart from this, all other buildings, including the canteen and trainee dormitories, were built underground.
The black-robed man who was sitting in the auditorium during the sacred selection the day before was not in the academy, so no one noticed Xia Ruize’s mental investigation. The three of them walked around the academy, figured out the situation of the academy, and then climbed over the tall wall and left the academy.
The mission world was already dark enough during the day, and it was pitch dark at night.
Groping their way forward in the dark, the three soon discovered that most of the residents of the city where the academy was located lived underground. Just like the students’ dormitories, their homes were built underground. There were very few buildings on the ground, and most of them were exquisite and solid buildings. It seemed that only the wealthy families in the city could afford to live in them.
The entire city was not very large. There was a high and large city wall around the city, and there were soldiers patrolling on the wall with lanterns.
As soon as they saw the tall city wall, Xia Ruize and Cheng Huaiqian were reminded of the world of evil spirits they had experienced before. In short, the presence of a tall city wall meant that there were enemies outside the wall that needed to be defended, and they were most likely the demon soldiers in the main mission.
The three who were confident in their own strength even climbed over the city wall to explore outside the city. However, outside the city, apart from farmlands and wasteland, there seemed to be nothing unusual. The three who found nothing had to return to the dormitory in the basement of the academy.
Poor Ye Se was still hitting his head on the desk while studying, which made people feel miserable.
Gao Hexuan couldn’t bear it, so he divided a little of the life energy generated by his life spring today to make a cup of water for Ye Se. Ye Se took the water and drank it in one gulp. He looked a little more energetic and continued reading with his eyes wide open.
Xia Ruize and the other two gave all the candles to Ye Se, then washed up and went to rest.
They didn’t know what kind of dangers they would encounter in the later stages of this mission world, so they should rest whenever they could while it was still safe.
Ye Se looked at his roommates with envy. His roommates were so amazing and could always complete their study tasks with ease. He wished he could be as smart as his roommates.
On the third day of arriving in this mission world, after being awakened by the bell, Xia Ruize and the other two discovered that Ye Se had fallen asleep on the table.
Ye Se was startled awake the moment he heard the bell and subconsciously muttered a few words of what he was reciting before going to bed.
The poor blond young man’s eyes were wide open, and he looked like he had almost reached his limit.
As expected, the trainees who followed their instructors into the classroom faced an assessment. The trainees all knew that this assessment was very important, and the tense atmosphere in the classroom was about to solidify.
The assessment results came out very quickly, and a small number of students failed the assessment. Among them, nearly twenty students failed the assessment three times in a row.
Upon hearing the test results, some students whose expressions had been stiff couldn’t help showing frustration, and some even shed tears, but the gray-robed teacher had already ruthlessly grabbed their collars and sent them out of the classroom.
There were suddenly nineteen fewer students in the classroom, and everyone knew that they would be expelled from the academy, missing this learning opportunity and would have to wait until next year for the next chance to participate in the sacred screening.
In addition, a dozen or so students were brought before the blue-robed teacher.
The blue-robed teacher who taught this morning was an earth magician. When he cast a spell, more than ten large dirt lumps appeared on the heads of the students who failed the second assessment, and then fell heavily down. Several students were hit and fell to the ground on the spot, but this could not change their situation of being punished to stand afterwards.
The other students in the classroom trembled and kept silent, fearing that they would be punished next time.
Ye Se’s golden hair was no longer as shiny as it was on the first day. He curled up into a small ball and turned his head to express his deep gratitude to his deskmate and roommate at the table behind him.
If his roommate hadn’t lent him the candle, he wouldn’t have been able to finish reading the four books distributed last night before class this morning, and he would most likely have failed today’s test.
Ye Se’s family was very poor. His coming to the academy not only reduced the food burden of his family, but if he could successfully become a magic apprentice, he could also subsidize his family. He cherished this opportunity to pass the divine selection.
Once the assessment results came out, no matter how devastated the trainees were, an even bigger blow followed.
The blue-robed teacher had already started explaining today’s lesson, which was another four-hour long theoretical indoctrination. Xia Ruize noticed that many indigenous students had begun to stimulate themselves in various ways to ensure their concentration, after all, the content of the morning course would be tested in the afternoon.
Some students’ actions were too radical and they even hurt themselves. The smell of blood gradually appeared in the classroom. Such a learning atmosphere made Xia Ruize and the other two silent.
In fact, neither the blue-robed teacher nor the gray-robed teacher had ever threatened the students with what they would do if they did not study hard. The three of them could see that the students studied hard completely on their own initiative.
As bystanders who didn’t know the inside story, they couldn’t just jump to the conclusion that other students’ behavior of harming themselves in order to learn was definitely wrong. What if the consequences of not learning were far worse than they thought?
They didn’t even know how to lend a helping hand, after all, the students who spent every minute of every day studying had no time to chat. So far, the three only knew their roommate’s name, and had no time to contact others.
One response to “ILE 198”
I wonder if their help for their roommate will result in additional rewards or hidden reward after they finish. Thank you for the chapter!
