Doomsday run (13): Confrontation

The truck sped forward on the rough road. The people on the roof were not afraid of the bumps and were happily playing cards. Only Xia Ruize was unhappy as he looked at the low remaining life bottle.

There was an upper limit to the amount of life energy the body could absorb each day. In order not to waste every day, the three of them needed to run farther at night to find suitable prey, and sometimes they had to run all night.

Fortunately, Gao Hexuan controlled the satellite and was able to determine the appropriate target location in advance and track the location of the convoy. Otherwise, they would not be able to find their way back when they ran out at night.

After more than three days, the convoy finally arrived at the northernmost tip of the mainland. The land here was connected to the mainland where Li Country was located. If they took the land route, they must go around here to reach the mainland where Li Country was located.

Another three days passed before the convoy entered the border of Li Country. The team members, who had been traveling with ease all the way, were finally alerted by their respective captains.

The journey was easier than expected. Apart from having to stay in the car and ride along with the truck, there was no need to fight most of the time because there were no zombies to be seen.

Only the guards at the research base knew that the real difficulty of this search mission was the destination, the Hall Research Base.

In order to go all out to deal with possible mutants, the team finally stopped for a day’s rest when they were still one day away from the Hall base, allowing the team members to recuperate and go all out.

Afterwards, the ten vehicles in the same convoy split into three groups of three or four vehicles each, and approached the Hall Research Base from different directions.

After seeing the Hall Research Base from a distance, the truck slowed down and only made a slight running sound. The guard leading the team had vigilance in his eyes and carefully directed his men to do a good job of defense.

The guards’ nervousness was passed on to their team members. Although they didn’t know what they were alert to, everyone became nervous.

All they saw were wild grass and dead trees, with an unknown black color that made them feel terrified. The only advantage was probably that they could see everything at a glance, and they didn’t have to worry about enemies lurking close by.

As they got closer to the Hall base, even the soil turned black, as if it was burnt.

The base buildings were also all black, like a huge black monster lying on the ground, waiting for snacks to be delivered to its door.

The atmosphere in the team became increasingly tense. Except for the slightly excited young researcher, everyone else had a serious expression. Their intuition told them that danger was lurking in the silent environment.

The buzzing sound of the intercom confirmed everyone’s guess.

The walkie-talkie in the hands of team leader Liu Jie suddenly rang with screams and cries for help, but the chaotic noise soon disappeared. No matter how Liu Jie asked, there was no response from the other side.

Staring at the walkie-talkie in Liu Jie’s hand, the other people on the roof of the car had a bad premonition in their hearts, which was soon confirmed. The four cars in this group checked the information with each other and found that they had received a distress signal from another group of vehicles, but there was no further response when the situation was unclear.

A chill ran down their backs, and no one could figure out what had happened. Could it be that the other convoy was completely wiped out in such a short time?

No matter how frightened everyone was, the truck continued to drive towards the base.

The truck finally stopped in front of the dilapidated building. Everyone jumped off the truck and formed a team to move towards the building. It was quiet all around and they could only hear their own and their companions’ footsteps. However, everyone felt their hearts were tightened, as if something was secretly spying on them.

Among the group of people, perhaps only the researchers were filled with excitement and anticipation.

The research base had been abandoned for a long time. Everyone entered from the collapsed corners of the wall and forced their way through any blocked roads. Everyone wore full-body protective clothing and gas masks and entered the Hall base as required by the researchers. They then watched the four researchers get busy.

The intercom suddenly rang again, this time it was the channel signal of the last group of vehicles in the convoy, but just like before, after a burst of chaotic sounds, no matter how they called, there was no response from the other side.

Several team leaders tried to contact the last group of drivers, but all failed.

The warriors in the laboratory looked at each other blankly, with suspicion in their eyes.

“How long will it take?”

Finally, someone couldn’t help but urge the busy researchers to leave, thinking that this place was too dangerous and they wanted to leave immediately.

The researcher was so focused on the work at hand that he didn’t respond at all. The captain took a look and soothed him, “Please be patient, it will be done soon. Don’t disturb the doctors.”

“They conduct research on site and transmit the data back to the research base via satellite.”

Gao Hexuan, however, noticed something unusual and informed the two bosses of his discovery through the telepathic network.

Xia Ruize and Cheng Huaiqian looked at each other and suddenly realized.

After the failure of the first search mission of the research base, they did not even think about bringing back the data successfully. This time they changed their thinking and sent researchers to conduct research directly in the abandoned Hall base and transmit important data back. As for whether the people participating in the mission could escape the Hall base safely, it was not within the scope of the plan.

At this point, the other two groups in the same convoy should have been wiped out, and they might be the next to be targeted.

Xia Ruize put down the gun in his hand, and instead tightened his light arrow, and started the spatial backtracking. The enemy must be very powerful, as they didn’t even have time to send out a distress signal for the other two convoys. It was not bad to be too cautious.

Gao Hexuan had already started typing the code, and clusters of light gray code took shape behind him.

Time passed minute by minute, and the heavy pressure made the warriors except the researchers wait and suffer silently. Suddenly, footsteps were heard outside the passage.

The “click” and “click” footsteps were clear and unbridled, as if they had determined that the humans in the building had no more reinforcements and didn’t even bother to hide.

Knowing that there were no sentries outside the laboratory and that the footsteps were definitely not from humans, the people stared closely at the entrance and held their weapons tightly.

Only four researchers didn’t even take a second look at it and continued to be busy with their research work. For their research base, this was the best and last chance. If they couldn’t collect enough data on the original virus this time, the base would not be able to organize another search operation.

After all, this kind of action of sending someone to their own death could only be used once before it ruined their credibility

The footsteps were getting closer and closer. Just as everyone was looking towards the entrance with increasing vigilance, Xia Ruize suddenly shouted “Behind!”

While warning, Xia Ruize had already turned around and shot the arrow swiftly. With a “whoosh”, the sound of footsteps disappeared, and the shot arrow and the attacked target also disappeared without a trace.

The warriors who saw nothing could not help but cast doubtful eyes at Xia Ruize, only to see the gentle temperament of the young man standing in the corner suddenly change drastically, revealing a sharp edge, looking around seriously and vigilantly, and at the same time reminded:

“The enemy is very fast, agile, and slightly larger than a human. Be careful.”

After hearing Xia Ruize’s words, the people in the laboratory suddenly showed different expressions. The guards were shocked, and the others were puzzled.

Xia Ruize turned to look at the captain of the team and asked coldly, “At this point, shouldn’t you explain it to everyone?”

The captain, who had not yet retracted his frightened expression, sighed inwardly at the angry, questioning looks from the others. It seemed that he could no longer hide it, so he had to explain:

“What we encountered is probably a monster higher than the super alien species, named ‘Mutant’. Unlike the previous levels of zombies, which get larger as their levels increase, the mutants are condensed and only slightly larger than the most common zombies, but their strength is vastly different. Not only are they extremely powerful and fast, but researchers also speculate that they have a certain degree of intelligence.”

After two seconds of reaction, many people were completely shocked after receiving the information revealed by the captain:

“What do you mean? You didn’t tell us that we would encounter monsters scarier than super aliens before we came here!”

“You knew about this in advance? Then you must have prepared a response plan, right?”

“I quit! Your research base has screwed me over!”

Facing the questioning from everyone, the captain looked embarrassed and replied:

“I’m afraid we can’t leave now. The enemy has already set their sights on us… No one can escape. We can only try to delay for a while…”

The reason why the research base had assembled so many team members was that it hoped that there would be strength in numbers and that they could delay the mutation for a while longer so that the researchers could collect more data.

The plan had been going smoothly so far. They had reached the interior of the Hall Research Base and started conducting experiments and collecting data. However, the captain remembered the sudden loss of communication between the two convoys and began to doubt how long they could delay.

Seeing the captain and other guards were silent and gave up hope of escaping, the others panicked instantly. Did these crazy people in the research base know that they were going to die? And they dragged more than 200 of them into the water?

The truth of the mission that was suddenly revealed was unacceptable to everyone. The research base actually concealed the real purpose of recruiting the suicide squad and sent them to a foreign country thousands of miles away to die? !

The angry coalition forces from various bases and the guards of the research base were in complete opposition, and in the chaos at the scene, no one noticed that Xia Ruize and Cheng Huaiqian were no longer in the laboratory.
